Owen Maclaren's first designed and built buggy was in 1965 at his medieval farmhouse in England, weighed 6 lb (3 kg) and collapsed to the size of an umbrella. It was built in response to seeing his daughter, on a visit from an America, struggle with a large pram. He realised there was a gap in the market for a lightweight stroller.
Maclaren made an important contribution to the development of baby transport, as his was the first true stroller - as opposed to a baby carriage or pram. The stroller is the transport method of choice for most parents today.
Today, strollers based around his original design are sold in over 50 countries under the Maclaren brand. These include the Maclaren triumph, volo, techno and quest. The Techno XLR and the Techno MX3 models can be fitted with a car seat to become travel systems.
